Did you know that from 1968 until 2008, the Hi-Pro Feeds tagline was ‘Quality is the first ingredient’? Today, this statement continues to be the foundation at Hi-Pro Feeds and the Quality Control Program.

This fall, the company launched the ‘Receiver Certification Course’ as another step in the development of a best-in-class quality assurance programs.  It was developed by Jenilee Peters-Tarasoff (Quality Manager), Lola Bussy (Quality Control Associate), and Dr. Mary Lou Swift (Director of Nutrition).

Through the curriculum, new Hi-Pro Feeds’ employees learn how to receive and measure the quality and nutrient specs of incoming ingredients that go into making feed for customers. It includes learning to use NIR machines (Near Infra Red Spectrometer) on samples of the ingredients, as well as performing laboratory tests and visual inspections to identify different types of contamination such as ergot, aflatoxin and vomitoxin. Having this training and using the tools correctly allows the Receivers at Hi-Pro Feeds to accept only ingredients of the highest quality.

Dr. Swift mentions proudly, “This is our contribution to making high quality feed.  By making sure we have excellent ingredients going into our feed at the beginning of the manufacturing process, it ensures we can provide a consistent quality product at the end.”

The program has started with first training all Receivers in Canada, and then moving to the US employees afterwards.  To date, 62 employees have been certified.  At the end of the training program, each employee receives a certificate, and a ‘Certified Receiver’ sticker for their hard hat. This allows them to be recognized for their important work. Both staff and customers will know and recognize that they have gone through the program and passed the course.

Collon Frost works in the Lethbridge, Alberta mill. He participated in the training and recalls, “I have never seen our receiving personnel get so engaged in their job. Our staff can communicate better with customers because they have the knowledge and information. Customers can trust what we are saying.”  He goes on to say, “I am truly proud to be part of this team, and all of the advancements that have been made to ensure our customers receive the highest quality feed products that we can be proud of.”
